World Oceans Day – Turning tides since 1981

Jun 06, 2025Lisa Shelley

This World Oceans Day, we celebrate the beauty, wonder and vital role that oceans play in our everyday lives. Since we first opened our doors, 44 years ago, we've been committed to protecting our oceans and the planet. Today reminds us how far we’ve come and the work that lies ahead.

We believe in using our voice to drive positive change. Over the years, we have joined forces with business and charities, successfully campaigning for the environment. We’ve seen first-hand that when we collaborate, incredible things can happen, so we’re proud to stand with the communities, organisations and activists calling for a healthy, blue planet.

Keeping tonnes of plastic out of the ocean

Partnering with Prevented Ocean Plastic™, we use plastic collected from coastal areas at risk of pollution and give it new life as certified recycled packaging.

So far, Prevented Ocean Plastic™ has saved more than 2.5 billion plastic bottles, or 50,000 tonnes, from reaching the water. This initiative not only benefits the environment, it supports communities too, creating over 300 direct jobs through new-build collection centres and thousands more through the recycling process.

Helping to #BanTheBead

We’ve never used plastic microbeads in any of our products, opting instead for natural exfoliating ingredients like rosehip seeds and cranberry seed powders for our polish, and ground rice or pumice powder for our scrub.

In 2018, we teamed up with Greenpeace and Fauna & Flora International  to successfully lobby the UK government to #BanTheBead in wash-off products. Five years later, we signed an open letter to the European Commission advocating for a faster and more complete ban on microplastics in cosmetics. Today, we continue to support the ban globally.

Protecting waterways with by going organic

One simple step we can all take to keep polluting chemicals out of our waterways is to look for the Soil Association or COSMOS organic logos, which you’ll find on all of our organic products.

The Soil Association is a charity dedicated to protecting our planet, its inhabitants and its ecosystems, including the oceans. When you see the logo on one of our bottles, it guarantees that the product has been made in a way that respects the environment and is free from any harmful chemicals, helping ensure our waterways remain clean and abundant with life.

Sourcing seaweed with care

Seaweed is rich with ocean-grown goodness, which is why we include it in our Seaweed & Arnica Collection. Certified organic and vegan, this powerhouse ingredient is naturally alkalising, with minerals that cleanse and revitalise skin.

Only the finest air-dried organic Bladderwrack seaweed is used, sustainably sourced from the British Isles and Nordic region. It is carefully selected, hand-cut and dried within hours to preserve its precious minerals. We celebrate the very best of what the ocean gives us, so you can ease tired muscles and refresh body and mind.

Surviving winter's harsh effects on skin demands more than just external care. Embrace a holistic approach by nourishing from within with essential fatty acids and vitamins, particularly Omegas and Vitamin C, to reinforce skin's integrity and enhance hydration. Opt for gentle, nourishing cleansers to avoid stripping skin of its natural oils. Incorporate hydrating essences and layer with facial oils to lock in moisture effectively. Regular exfoliation removes dead cells, enhancing product efficacy. Emphasize overnight nourishment to support skin's repair process, and don't neglect hand care—exfoliate, treat with serums, and moisturize diligently.
