Fall Skincare Tips to Help You Weather The Cold

Oct 29, 2021Lisa Shelley

You might notice that as soon as the temperature drops, your skin is a little drier. Well, you’re not alone. Seasonal dryness is very common in the fall and winter months.

The colder weather usually means less moisture in the air, which means less moisture for your skin. Combined with windy days and central heating, fall weather can lead to dry and irritated skin.

Thankfully, there are some straightforward adjustments you can make, starting with your moisturizer.

Try a More Nourishing Moisturizer

When you think of dry skin, you probably automatically think of your moisturizer. If your regular moisturizer leaves your skin feeling dry in the fall, it’s time to try a more hydrating moisturizer.

A thicker, deeply moisturizing product will help add extra hydration to your skin and help your skin maintain it. Vitamin E and nourishing oils, such as jojoba and macadamia seed, are ingredients to look for when it comes to intense moisturization.

The customer favourite Wild Rose Beauty Balm contains vitamin E and rosehip seed oil, making it deeply nourishing for even the driest skin. Use it as a moisturizer or a deeply nourishing mask to give your skin a boost of hydration and radiance.

Moisturize Your Lips & Eyes

Even if you don’t normally use lip balm or an eye cream, the fall is the time to do it. The skin on your lips and around your eyes is extra sensitive, making it more susceptible to changes in weather.

When choosing a lip balm, it’s important to look for ingredients that will protect and nourish your lips. Ingredients like beeswax will form a protective barrier, which locks in moisture and shields your lips from wind and cold.

Also, look for nourishing plant oils such as softening shea nut butter and coconut oil. The Organic Shea Nut & Rosehip Lip Formula contains beeswax, coconut oil, shea nut butter, and rosehip oil to shield and moisturize your lips when the cold weather hits.

For your eyes, it’s also important to look for ingredients that protect and nourish. The delicate eye area really benefits from deeply moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and macadamia oil, which attract water to the skin. To help with dark circles, look for caffeine and reflective pigments to brighten.

The Wild Rose Eye Brightener contains hyaluronic acid and organic rosehip seed oil to instantly smooth and plump the eye area. Caffeine and reflective mineral pigments also help to brighten dark circles. In fact, 83% of users agree the Wild Rose Eye Brightener made their eyes look brighter.

Avoid Excessive Exfoliation

When you see dry, flaky skin, your first thought might be to exfoliate it away. However, excessive exfoliants can strip your skin’s moisture barrier, and cold weather makes the situation even worse.

Avoid scrubbing your face with washcloths or other exfoliators. Also, watch out for ingredients like retinoids, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and BHAs. These are chemical exfoliants that can have a similar drying effect.

If you find yourself needing some exfoliation, use a gentle exfoliator no more than once a week. When choosing an exfoliator, look for nourishing ingredients like aloe vera that will also soothe the skin.

The Rehydrating Rose Facial Polish contains both aloe vera and milk thistle to replenish your skin as it exfoliates. It also uses rosehip seed powder to gently remove dead skin cells and is microbead-free, so you can get a smoother complexion without harmful microplastics.

Add an Oil to Your Routine

Add an Oil to Your Routine

Facial oils are great for protecting and nourishing your skin. They work for every skin type too, including oily skin, because it’s important to keep all skin types well-moisturized.

When your skin is dry, it sends signals to your body to produce more oil. So if you don’t moisturize oily skin, you can accidentally cause your skin to produce more oil, making your skin even oilier.

Oils can even help with acne prevention and treatment, fine lines, wrinkles, and sensitive skin. There’s a face oil for every skin type:

  • For dry skin, try the Orange Flower Facial Oil. It’s made of a blend of omega and pure plant oils to deeply nourish skin, helping to restore moisture levels.
  • For normal skin, try the Rehydrating Rose Facial Oil. It has a combination of damask rose and organic oils to give normal skin types a moisture boost.
  • For all skin types, including oily, try the Rejuvenating Frankincense Facial Oil. It contains frankincense and organic botanical oils to moisturize, tone, and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Don’t Forget Natural Sunscreen

Even if you aren’t spending all day in the hot sun, fall isn’t the time to neglect sun safety. Your skin can be damaged by the sun’s rays in fall and winter too.

Make sure you’re still wearing SPF whenever you’re outside, even if it’s not hot or sunny. It’s not a bad idea to incorporate natural sunscreen into your morning routine every day, year-round.

Incorporate Self-Care

Feeling good is looking good. Improving our self-care routine, specifically your sleep schedule, can help if you notice a change in your skin.

If your skin is dry, that’s also a great reminder to make sure you’re drinking enough water. For most people, this is 6-8 glasses per day.

If water isn’t enough, a humidifier is another great way to increase moisture levels and reduce the effects of dry fall air.

Know Your Skin Type

Your skin concerns likely change throughout the year because of countless factors like weather, stress levels, diet, and more. That said, your skin probably has a baseline skin type.

If you’re unsure about your skin type, you can take a blotting sheet to measure how oily your skin is:

  • No oil on the blotting sheet means you have dry skin.
  • Some oil from your nose and forehead, but not your cheeks, means you have combination skin.
  • Oil from all areas of the face means you have oily skin.

There is an important difference between dry and dehydrated skin. Dry skin is dry year-round. If you have combination or oily skin, you might experience dehydrated skin sometimes, especially during the fall and winter.

If you’re dealing with dehydrated skin, you can adjust your skincare routine to include heavier moisturizers in the cooler months.

Our Recommendations for Fall Skincare

For dry skin, or combination skin that’s on the dryer side due to fall weather, we recommend gentle products that help replenish your skin’s moisture.

  1. Start your routine with the Calendula Cleanser. This ultra-gentle cleanser is a cream, which means it washes away impurities without stripping your skin. Organic calendula soothes while jojoba oil moisturizes.
  2. Next, the Nourishing Orange Flower Toner tones your skin without leaving it feeling tight and dry. Neroli oil, distilled from the blossom of the bitter orange tree, tones and clarifies your skin to reveal a fresh, glowing complexion.
  3. The Wild Rose Beauty Serum has vitamin C, which helps repair and smooth your skin. Along with hyaluronic acid and pure essential oils, this serum is ultra-moisturizing.
  4. Orange Flower Facial Oil uses a blend of omega and pure plant oils to deeply moisturize and replenish skin, helping your skin maintain its radiance.
  5. Finally, the Jasmine Enriching Cream deeply nourishes dry and neglected skin. Its hydrating ingredients like jojoba and vitamin E restore dry skin day or night.

Our Recommendations for Fall Skincare

For oily skin, we recommend sticking to a more invigorating cleanser and clarifying treatment, and then following up with a facial oil and moisturizer to help replenish dehydrated skin.

  1. Starting your routine with a cleanser like the Purifying Palmarosa Facial Wash means you can cleanse your skin without stripping it. This cleanser is low foaming to gently and effectively cleanse.
  2. Next, the Purifying Palmarosa Toner removes any traces of make-up and impurities to balance and refresh your skin.
  3. The Clarifying Mahonia Skin Gel treats blemish-prone skin with mahonia, thyme, soothing marigold and gotu kola. It also soothes and hydrates skin with hyaluronic acid and aloe vera.
  4. The Rejuvenating Frankincense Facial Oil works for all skin types, including oily skin. It contains frankincense and organic botanical oils to moisturize, tone, and rejuvenate.
  5. If you find you get oily throughout the day, you can use a lighter moisturizer during the day and a deeper moisturizer at night. Try the Yarrow & Comfrey Moisturizer morning and night.
